MARKETS OF THE UNITED STATES
History has it that the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) began over 200 years ago with the first private transactions taking place under a tree along Wall Street in what would later become New York City. At the time, the trading day was only a few hours, sometimes lasting from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Only some 39 issues were traded, mostly banks, and daily volume often hovered in the 50-200 share range, hardly what we think of as modern time's active market. Today, the NYSE alone handles over 500 million shares traded each business day, these shares valued at roughly billion. In the course of a year, about 115 billion shares of stock are traded with a cummulative value of about .4 trillion dollars. The NASDAQ stock market, the second largest in the United States handles about .8 billion per day for about billion per year. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, American Stock Exchange, and all other United States markets currently account for some 34% of world assets, or .4 trillion, about the same amount as the GDP of the United States per year.
